We check the flashing and house wrap behind every siding project, not just the panels you see from the street.
Siding rarely fails simply from age alone. Far more often, the actual cause is water getting behind the cladding through a poorly flashed window, a missing house wrap seam, or siding installed without proper clearance from the ground or roofline. Once moisture is trapped behind siding, it can rot sheathing and framing long before the visible siding itself looks damaged.
This is why we inspect the house wrap and flashing details during every siding project, not just the visible panels. Replacing damaged siding over an unresolved moisture path is a repair that typically fails again within a few years.
Vinyl siding remains the most budget-friendly option with minimal maintenance, though it can fade or become brittle over decades of sun exposure. Fiber cement offers significantly better impact resistance and a more substantial look, at a higher material and installation cost. Engineered wood siding splits the difference, offering a traditional wood appearance with better moisture resistance than solid wood. We walk through the tradeoffs of each based on your home's exposure and budget.
Isolated damage, a cracked panel from storm debris or a section pulled loose in high wind, is usually addressed with a targeted repair, matching the existing siding profile and color as closely as possible. Full re-siding becomes the better option when damage is widespread, when the house wrap underneath has failed in multiple areas, or when a full exterior remodel is already planned alongside roofing work.
Improperly installed roof flashing at wall intersections is one of the more common hidden causes of siding damage we find, since water running off a poorly flashed roofline can be directed straight down behind the siding below it. Because we handle both trades, we check this intersection specifically, something a siding-only contractor is less likely to catch.
